Sage Sankara said:~ Brahman (Atman) is real . The universe is unreal. Brahman is the universe. +

Sage Sankara was criticized for his views on Maya (illusion) without understanding him.

Sage Sankara  said:~

(1) Brahman (Atman) is real

(2) The universe is unreal, and

(3) Brahman is the universe.

He did not stop at the second because the third explains the other two. It signifies that the universe is real if perceived as the ‘Self’ and unreal if perceived as apart from the Self. Hence, Maya or illusion and reality are one and the same.

Realists criticize the concept of illusion without understanding it. He said that:

(1) Consciousness (Atman) is real

(2) The universe or mind is unreal, and

(3) Consciousness is the mind or universe because the universe or mind is merely an illusion created out of consciousness.

One need not stop at the second because the third explains the other two. It signifies that the universe is real if perceived as the Self (Atman or consciousness) and unreal if perceived as apart from the Self (consciousness). Hence, the illusion and the reality are one and the same because both are one in essence.

Realizing the essence, which is consciousness as the  Self, is Self-realization, or Truth-realization, or God-realization. Sage Sankara‘s declaration is rational truth, scientific truth, and also ultimate truth.

There is nothing more rational, more intelligible, and more un-dogmatic insights of sage Sage Sankara, is to drop all the theistic non-duality or Advaita which is meant for those who are incapable and not receptive to realize the ultimate truth or Brahman.

Swami Vivekananda said: - “You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.”

Without knowing what truth is, how can one know what is untruth? Mere bookish knowledge or knowledge based on speculation and assumption is mere playing with the words is not non-dual wisdom. Intellectuality is based on the false self,  thus it will not yield any fruits.
How can one look on the conscious level when his body, ego, and the universe are an object to the true Self, which is in the form of consciousness.
Until one traces the formless substance and the witness of the mind, which is in the form of the universe, the non-dual wisdom will not dawn.
A longer explanation in depth is very much needed in pursuit of truth, which helps the seeker think and helps the seeker to divert his attention from the form to formless.

The scripture's theories and teachings based on the ego are not the yardstick. Using them as a yardstick to understand and assimilate the truth will lead one toward the pursuit of arguments.

The seeker of truth has to discover on his own, the truth of his true existence by inquiring “What is the mind?” and “What is the substance of the mind?” and move forward.

The Advaitic wisdom consists in knowing the truth, that everything (mind or physical existence) is consciousness.

Freedom (truth) is always there yet one does not know it.  But those whose reason is turned away from physicality and who have attained the serenity of the Soul, the Self are quite near to the ultimate truth.

To think one own body and his experience of the world is an illusion is a difficult matter.

Unless one realizes the self is not physical, but it is invisible Soul it is difficult to have a glimpse of truth.

When one realizes that the Self is not physical, but the formless Soul, naturally the body and the universe become an illusion.

The mind (universe) emanates from the soul (consciousness) means the mind is being effect of consciousness and is not different from it.

A deeper analysis shows it. Analysis needs deeper thinking and reasoning. The mind is the whole universe thus it has a form. Consciousness has no form.

Consciousness is like an ocean and the mind is like a wave.  The universe is the same consciousness, as the ocean produces the wave, so consciousness produces the mind (universe).

The moment one knows the mind (universe) is consciousness, and then there is no ignorance.

If one knows consciousness as self then everything is consciousness,   consciousness is second to none.

The mind is consciousness but due to ignorance one mistakes it for something else. One thinks the self is within the body, but the self is without the body and the world.

The mind ceases to exist without the matter. Without the matter, the mind ceases to exist as a mind but it exists as a matter- less awareness or consciousness. Without the mind, neither the world nor its perceiver can exist.

Without the matter, there is no duality. Without duality, there is no experience. Without the experience, it is a non-dual reality. Therefore, whatever prevails without the mind is the ultimate reality.

The true nature of the Soul (consciousness) is camouflaged by the illusion(duality).  To know the truth one has to discover and realize the formless substance of the mind or illusion.

One has to learn to view and judge the worldview from the standpoint of the formless Soul as the Self.

Self-knowledge is the prime goal of the truth seeker. This goal is hidden within the mind as its invisible substance and witness. It is necessary to inquire, analyze, and reason into the nature of mind (duality/illusion) to unfold the mystery of mind or duality or illusion.:~  Santthosh Kumaar
